Dwight Gaylord McCarty papers, 1905-1972.

A major portion of the collection is made up of manuscripts and reprints of McCarty's publications and related correspondence with publishers. Much of the remainder of the collection is comprised of law office correspondence and correspondence with various organizations including the Grinnell Alumni Association, the Iowa State Bar Association, the Palo Alto County Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the State Planning Board, the American College of Probate Counsel, the Emmetsburg Park Board, the Iowa Conference of Bar Association Presidents, the Commercial Law League of America and the Committee on State Planning Legislation. The collection also includes pictures, speeches, poems and autobiographical materials. Manuscripts and/or other materials for the following books can be found in the collection: 66 years a lawyer and writer (an unpublished autobiography); History of Palo Alto County; Law office management; McCarty Iowa probate; Iowa pleading; Iowa lawyer's manual; Psychology and the law; and Stories of pioneer life on the Iowa prairie.

Dwight McCarty was born at Sioux City, Iowa in 1878. He graduated from Emmetsburg High School (1897), Grinnell College (1901) and Harvard Law School (1904). In 1904 he joined his father George B. McCarty's law firm (McCarty & McCarty) in Emmetsburg. He remained in practice in Emmetsburg throughout his career.
